Lately I've been trying to learn more about NZ history. Relearning what I learnt at school and adding to my knowledge. I've been walking to work listening to the RNZ Aotearoa History podcast while walking past some of the places where it all happened
Māori legend has it that when Hau reached this river his heart stood still so he named it Manawatū (standing heart).

Today's hike is the Manawatū Gorge Track. 
Region: Manawatū obviously
Length: 11km one-way
Highlights: The giant Māori warrior st
